State Route 247: State Scenic Highway

Sections of State Route 247 from Barstow to Yucca Valley were designated as a State Scenic Highway by Caltrans on September 4, 2025.

Background

The Department of Transportation (Caltrans) administers the State Scenic Highway Program, established in 1963, to preserve and enhance the natural scenic qualities of California’s highways and surrounding corridors. The program is authorized under Streets and Highways Code Sections 260 through 263. Pursuing State Scenic Highway designation for State Route 247 (SR 247) was identified in the Homestead Valley Communities Action Guide under Action Statement D.1.

Process

A State Scenic Highway becomes officially designated through a process in which the local governing body applies to Caltrans, adopts a Corridor Protection Program, and then receives official notice from the Caltrans Director confirming the highway’s designation as a State Scenic Highway.

The postmile designations reference specific segments of SR 247 that have been formally designated. Not all portions of SR 247 meet the eligibility criteria for State Scenic Highway designation.
